Brian Mullen, PhD

Biography

Brian has 20 years of experience creating, developing and leading innovation groups, projects, and programming. One of Brian’s main passions is to help clinicians and researchers strategically translate their ideas to practice in an efficient and effective way.  He is currently an assistant professor at MassArt’s in the Master’s for Design Innovation program, board president of the Institute for Human-Centered Design, and on the industry advisory board for UMass Amherst’s Center for Personalized Health Monitoring.

The last 4 years Brian lead supporting internal innovation at Brigham Health’s Innovation Hub. Brian worked with BWH clinicians and researchers to help them strategically advance their innovation projects to maximize there time and budget in developing solutions that meet their needs and vision. In his role Brian lead the design, creation and lunch of multiple innovation initiatives developed strategic collaborations with industry worked 1:1 with innovators across the hospital from administrative staff to researchers and clinicians helping them form and advance their innovative ideas to implementation and or commercialization.

Previously to his time at the innovation hub, Brian got his Ph.D., Masters and Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During his Ph.D. he researched early-stage design methodology and how to design products for people with mental illnesses and cognitive disabilities. Based on his research he Founded and became CEO of a medical device startup, Therapeutic Systems. Therapeutic Systems’ aim was to provide evidence-based medical devices for people with autism, ADHD, PTSD, and other anxiety-based disorders.
