Biography
Kimani C. Toussaint, Jr., Ph.D., is the Thomas J. Watson, Sr. Professor of Science and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives in the School of Engineering at Brown University. He serves as Director of the Brown University Center for Digital Health, where he leads interdisciplinary efforts to advance research, innovation, and collaboration at the intersection of healthcare and technology.
Dr. Toussaint also directs the laboratory for Photonics Research of Bio/nano Environments (PROBE Lab), a highly interdisciplinary research group focused on quantitative nonlinear optical imaging techniques, structured light, nano-optics, and optical health-monitoring technologies that mitigate bias. His research spans biomedical optics, digital health, and emerging technologies that improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
Prior to joining Brown University, Dr. Toussaint served on the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he spent 12 years and rose to the rank of Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering.
Dr. Toussaint is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Associate Professorship at MIT, the Illinois Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, the Illinois Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence, and Brown University's 2024 Innovator of the Year Award. He is a Fellow of Optica, SPIE, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and serves on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science.
His work on equitable pulse oximetry and bias-mitigating health-monitoring technologies has been featured in national and international media outlets and continues to influence the future of digital health innovation.
